Valerie owns and operates Blumer Dairy with her husband, David. The Pattens are third-generation dairy farmers and have two children. They milk 450 Holsteins and farm 800 acres of corn silage and haylage. The family raises all young stock on the dairy and has incorporated a small beef operation as a result of Angus crosses. Valerie is a competitive Team Roper, and also enjoys training young horses. She currently serves on the Dairy One board of directors and on the Cornell University Cooperative Extension Nominating Committee. She has been a 4-H leader and volunteer in her community for many years. The Pattens have been honored as a Dairy of Distinction each year since 1991, and Valerie was awarded New York State Outstanding Young Farmer in 1993.
