How Dairy Farmers of America is celebrating June Dairy Month

06/3/2024
In honor of June Dairy Month, we’re raising a glass of real milk to the farmer-owners and employees of Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) to thank them for everything they do to put delicious, nutritious dairy on family tables across the nation and around the world.

What is June Dairy Month?

Every June, dairy farmers, manufacturers, cooperatives, retailers, industry organizations and dairy-loving consumers celebrate June Dairy Month, which kicks off on June 1 with World Milk Day, to highlight the unmatched nutrition, quality, sustainability and community focus of real dairy.

So, why is June National Dairy Month? The month has a long history. Originally started in 1937 as National Milk Month, the monthlong celebration was established to promote drinking surplus milk during the warmer summer season. By 1939, the month had expanded to include all dairy as National Dairy Month. Today, dairy’s rich history and all-around goodness continues to be celebrated every June with communities, companies and people observing the month in a variety of ways.

In 2001, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations established World Milk Day to recognize the importance of milk as a global food and to celebrate the dairy industry. Each year since, on June 1, the benefits of milk and dairy products have been actively promoted around the world, including how dairy supports the livelihoods of 1 billion people.

What we’re doing to celebrate

As a leading global dairy cooperative, DFA recognizes June Dairy Month (and World Milk Day to kick off the month) every year on behalf of our more than 10,000 farmer-owners and our dedicated employees who support them. This year, we are:

  • Making monetary donations to more than 150 community food markets across the country for the purchase of dairy products through our DFA Cares Foundation. The community food markets selected were identified by our farmer-owners in the communities where they live and work
  • Celebrating our employees, who all support our farmer-owners and help provide nutritious, wholesome dairy products to the world. At our headquarters office and at our offices, labs and manufacturing facilities across the nation, DFA employees are raising their glasses in milk toasts to celebrate dairy and all those who help make it. Additional celebrations are taking place at our locations throughout the month, including local fundraising and community events
  • Across the country, DFA farmer-owners are hosting school tours, breakfasts, open houses and more on their farms to celebrate the month and share where dairy comes from with their local communities
