SIMPLIFED TAKES INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO BABY FEEDING

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends babies be exclusively breastfed until they reach six months old — but only 25% of mothers are actually meeting this benchmark, according to Andrea Ippolito, CEO and founder of SimpliFed. Andrea cites two potential reasons for this gap: roughly 25% of new moms return to work in just two weeks, which may not be enough time to establish a breastfeeding routine, and breastfeeding can be an extremely difficult adjustment — both emotionally and physically.

After having her first child, Andrea felt a lack of support from the lactation services available to her. Her experience of first-time motherhood inspired her to create SimpliFed, a company that takes a comprehensive approach to breastfeeding, complete with lactation support and an organic baby formula that parents can feel good about supplementing breastmilk with or transition to completely.

“Our goal is to support mom and baby together by first working to increase breastfeeding rates for those who can and want to via our tele-lactation platform,” Andrea says. “We meet parents where they’re at and help support them on their baby-feeding journey. In the background, we’re building an organic, traceable, transparent formula inspired by European recipes that parents can feel good about.”

SimpliFed participated in DFA’s 2021 CoLAB Accelerator, our 90-day program to grow ag-tech and dairy food startups, and gained valuable insights and resources in the process.

“My favorite part of DFA’s CoLAB program was getting to work with the experts at DFA,” she says. “That is just such a level of expertise that we don’t have access to on an ongoing basis. Secondly, being part of a cohort and listening and learning from others — our peers teach us and help us learn faster. Third, we got to learn about new innovations in the dairy industry.”

As SimpliFed develops, Andrea sees it as a go-to company that takes a comprehensive approach to baby feeding. SimpliFed embraces the fact that most moms both breastfeed and supplement with formula. Additionally, SimpliFed would like to change the narrative around breastfeeding — the company has advocated for policies for Medicaid to cover lactation support and driven transparency in infant formula ingredients. The company recently raised $500,000 to go toward further infant nutrition support, which is something that Andrea says she is excited to use to make an impact for babies and moms nationwide.

“Lactation support isn’t something you do once and say, ‘I can breastfeed now perfectly!’” Andrea says. “I have never felt so broken than after my first daughter was born and trying to figure out how to navigate baby feeding. When you have your kid and you just have no idea how to feed them, and you’re thinking ‘This is my first task as a parent.’ And there’s so much stigma that you experience regarding how you feed your baby. We’re trying to change that narrative.”
