We are the Nerd Herd

Protecting our environment takes a herd. That’s why the farmer-owners of Dairy Farmers of America have gathered the Nerd Herd: a farmer-led team of engineers, scientists, veterinarians, nutritionists and more to lead the way toward greener fields. Together, we’re helping preserve and protect our planet through renewable energy, healthy soil and nutrient management. Dairy can help, and you can too, with every bite, sip or slurp.

Meet the Nerd Herd

The DFA farmer-owner

As caretakers of animals and the land, farmers are the OG conservationists. For them, sustainability isn’t just an initiative — it’s a way of life and a responsibility to future generations. DFA farmers are committed to developing solutions and sharing them with others, so farm families have the opportunity to work the same land for years to come.

The engineer

Engineers are math-minded geniuses. They help us build out our environmental sustainability initiatives and turn our big ideas into reality. Thanks to these enginerds, our farms are transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines.

The veterinarian

We love our cows, and ensuring they receive exceptional care is a top priority. Vets play a big role in keeping our girls healthy and happy. They also work with farmers and field staff to train them in the latest animal care practices.

DFA farmer-owner sustainability in action

How cow manure and food waste power a 250-cow dairy farm

An anaerobic digester installed on this Massachusetts dairy farm turns organic food waste and cow manure into energy. It converts three to four truckloads — or 100 tons — of food waste every day to produce one megawatt of electricity an hour, or about $100,000 worth of electricity every month.
