Recently, Borden® Cheese began its “Friends of Elsie” campaign to highlight the farmers who provide high-quality milk by doing what’s right for their land and animals. The Friends of Elsie campaign allows consumers and others to show their support to American dairy farmers who work hard every day to put the best the farm has to offer on their table.
Farmer-focused marketing messaging and packaging helps spread the word that Borden® Cheese is made by a 100% farmer-owned cooperative. American Dairy Brands understands the importance of high-quality packaging that helps sell products by providing strong visual impact on the retailer’s shelf. The signature bright red package of Borden® Cheese features Elsie and the Borden® logo to draw consumer attention and encourage purchase within the dairy case.
The Friends of Elsie campaign has allowed American Dairy Brands to highlight DFA farmers, offer farm favorite recipes and timesaving tips for families through its Web site, FriendsOfElsie.com.
Elsie the Cow
Elsie was born in the 1930s, first appearing in medical journals extolling the virtues of milk. Americans quickly took to her kindly visage, and she began appearing in national ads. It was during the 1939 New York World’s Fair that visitors to the Borden® exhibit so loved Elsie, the icon, that they demanded to meet the “real Elsie,” and the first live Elsie the Cow was introduced. By the 1940s, marketing surveys found Elsie was better known than Mickey Mouse, and a 1952 poll revealed that she was more recognizable than presidential candidate Robert Taft. Elsie is on Advertising Age magazine’s list of “Top 10 Advertising Icons of the 20th Century.”
