Six Mideast Area Scholarships Awarded

July 5, 2011

MEDINA, Ohio – College students from six Dairy Farmers of America, Inc. (DFA) member families are the recipients of $750 Mideast Area scholarships for 2011.

Each year the Mideast Area selects six college students from members’ farms who excel in their extracurricular activities, academics and dairy farming work ethic. The recipients of the scholarships represent the future of the dairy industry.

“A panel of three judges, each who serves as a Mideast Area Council member, had the honor of selecting this year’s scholarship recipients,” said Heather Schofield, Mideast Area communications manager. “The Council members were impressed by the quality of the applications that were received and had a difficult decision in narrowing down the finalists.”

The 2011 scholarship recipients include:
• LeeAnn Steinke, University of Northwestern Ohio, Agricultural Business
• Zachary Guggenbiller, Wright State University – Lake Campus, Agricultural Business Management
• Kyle Sprunger, Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne, Business Administration
• Jill Zehentbauer, University of Akron, Radiologic Technology
• Heath Mineer, University of Kentucky – Lexington, Agricultural Education
• Sam Weingart, The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute, Dairy Science and Agronomy

This year a total of 20 Mideast Area students will receive more than $20,000 to assist with their higher education as a result of these at-large scholarships, DFA’s endowed scholarships at several Mideast Area land grant universities and contributions to the Michigan Dairy Memorial Scholarship Fund.
