DFA Presents Inaugural Tom Camerlo Leadership Award

March 23, 2010

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Longtime industry leader Clyde Rutherford was recognized at Dairy Farmers of America, Inc.’s (DFA) 12th Annual Meeting as the recipient of the inaugural Tom Camerlo Leadership Award. The award was created to honor the legacy of late DFA Board Chairman Tom Camerlo, who passed away in December 2009.

“For more than 35 years, Clyde worked alongside Tom in pursuit of a better dairy industry,” said Rick Smith, president and chief executive officer. “I know Tom would be immensely proud to see his longtime friend and colleague receiving such well-deserved recognition.”

The Tom Camerlo Leadership Award celebrates a lifetime of leadership, vision, dedication and commitment to the dairy industry. This award is given to leaders who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to working for dairy farmers and has made a positive impact on the U.S. and global dairy industry.

In honor of Rutherford, a $5,000 contribution was made to DFA’s scholarship program through the DFA Cares Foundation.

Rutherford is president and chairman of Dairylea Cooperative Inc., a position he has held since 1978. In addition, he is active with a number of industry associations on the national and regional level. Rutherford serves on DFA’s Board of Directors, is on the board of the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy and is vice chairman of the board of directors for National Milk Producers Federation.

He also is vice chairman of Dairy One, a director for the U.S. Dairy Export Council, on the board of O-AT-KA Milk Products Cooperative, Inc. and on the executive committee of Empire Livestock Marketing LLC. He serves on the board of BlueCross BlueShield of Central New York.

Outside of his industry work, Rutherford and his wife, Jeannette, enjoy spending time with their family – daughter and son-in-law Diane and David Krol and their children, Alex and John; and daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Mike Gorelick and their children, Allison and Emily.
