CWT Proposal Update

Producers considering holding on to individual cull cows until the voluntary supply management program is approved and implemented should go a head and send their cows to town.

The NMPF’s Economic Policy Committee (chaired by Tom Camerlo) convened April 23, via conference call to review certain aspects of the CWT Program. As a result, the EPC further refined the “cow removal” option by eliminating the bred cow provision from the program. The bred cow provision was removed from the program proposal because, after review, the EPC recognized that the amount of milk to be removed from the market through the elimination of bred cows would not be cost effective compared to the other program elements.

On a separate issue, the Committee decided to require those producers who choose to participate in the reduced marketings program to submit a bid indicating the payment ($ per cwt.) they would be willing to receive to reduce their production by a specified percentage (minimum 10 percent) and also indicating how they intend to achieve the reduction. You will recall the original provision would have offered a flat $5.00 per cwt. to all producers intending to participate.
