CWT Proposal Update
Producers considering holding on to individual cull
cows until the voluntary supply management program is approved and implemented
should go a head and send their cows to town.
The NMPF’s Economic Policy Committee (chaired by Tom Camerlo) convened
April 23, via conference call to review certain aspects of the CWT Program.
As a result, the EPC further refined the “cow removal” option
by eliminating the bred cow provision from the program. The bred cow provision
was removed from the program proposal because, after review, the EPC recognized
that the amount of milk to be removed from the market through the elimination
of bred cows would not be cost effective compared to the other program
elements.
On a separate issue, the Committee decided to require
those producers who choose to participate in the reduced marketings program
to submit a bid indicating the payment ($ per cwt.) they would be willing
to receive to reduce their production by a specified percentage (minimum
10 percent) and also indicating how they intend to achieve the reduction.
You will recall the original provision would have offered a flat $5.00
per cwt. to all producers intending to participate.
These changes are now reflected in
