Young Cooperator Program

Where relationships run deep…and every member matters

The mission statement of the Dairy Farmers of America, Inc. Young Cooperator (YC) Program is to foster interaction between young cooperators, the dairy industry and their communities; to share knowledge and develop leadership skills; and to understand the value and philosophy of a cooperative, enabling young cooperators to improve their industry, their cooperative and their lives.

DFA’s YC Program provides amazing opportunities for young people to become leaders on local, regional and national levels. New experiences are becoming available for international experiences, as DFA members travel the world to study cooperative practices.

The YC Program provides a continuing educational process for each participant regarding the basic principles and practices of cooperatives, specifically DFA and other agriculture related cooperatives. The program also helps to develop personal and leadership skills that can be utilized at home, on the farm, in the cooperative and in the community. YC participants create fellowships among young farmers within their area and across the country. These associations allow them to share ideas and experiences.

DFA’s Young Cooperator Overseas Exchange Program

The purpose of the DFA Young Dairy Leader Development Program is to promote the international farming community. The program enhances the image of dairy farming by encouraging young people to use the opportunities that are available to improve and expand their farming knowledge and skills.

Participation expands the spirit of cooperation among DFA members and encourages young farmers to broaden their views (including overseas) by observing how other farmers conduct their operations.

Young farmers are given the opportunity to be directly involved in day-to-day operations in different cultures, under different management styles, and in different work environments.

Host farmers have the opportunity to pass on experiences to the worldwide farming community. The program enriches the lives of young farmers and host farmers through both technical and social interchange. Read how the program expanded one young dairy farmer’s horizons.

DFA’s Young Cooperator Leadership Opportunities

DFA’s Young Cooperator Program is about building the dairy farmer leaders of tomorrow. The program offers a broad experience and numerous opportunities for young people to sharpen their leadership skills and knowledge of co-op practices; participate in legislative processes; and develop management skills.

Leadership opportunities include: development programs that educate local DFA YC members on the value of cooperatives in the dairy industry and the honor of attending the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) annual meeting.
