The Benefits of DFAs Grassroots Structure
DFAs marketing strength begins at the grassroots
level.
DFA was established in 1998, as a dairy marketing cooperative
created by dairy members, for dairy members. Since then, more
than 19,500 members have chosen to market their milk through
DFA, and more members are joining our ranks every day.
Q: How do members have a voice at the local level?
A: Dairy members just like you have an opportunity
to make their voices heard through DFAs grassroots leadership structure.
The structure of members includes elected delegates, members
of Area Councils, area and corporate resolutions committees, and the DFA
corporate Board of Directors, who are responsible for making the financial,
marketing and legislative decisions that benefit DFA producer-members
across the nation.
Q: Will I have input in the organization?
A: The DFA cooperative is structured for local
farmer input and control. DFA is made up of seven geographic Areas.
Within each Area, members elect one delegate for every 50 farms. Each
Area has flexibility in determining the level of local involvement. For
example, districts are established within the Area. Locals may be established
within the districts. Area Council and the Resolutions Committee
members will be elected by the districts members. Area Council persons will
nominate candidates to the Board of Directors from among themselves. Those
candidates are voted on by the delegates at the annual meeting. Each Area
funds the costs associated with the local governance structure that is
developed by members in the Area Council.
Q: How will DFA help me to better control my future?
A: DFA will have more capacity and ability to
market and process member milk. DFA allows you to participate in more
levels of the food chain and brings you closer to the consumer which ultimately
means improved returns and profitability for the cooperatives dairy
farmer members.
DFA members also have access to a portfolio of other
services and service options intended to help them to succeed in todays
challenging business environment.
