Accidents kill too many children

When statistics involve the young, the news about farm accidents takes on an even more important role. The farm is a wonderful place to live. But with all of its modern technology and equipment, farms can also be dangerous places for families to live, play and work.

It doesn’t have to be that way, and that is why Farm Safety 4 Just Kids (FS4JK) exists. As a not-for-profit organization, Farm Safety 4 Just Kids teaches farm families how to protect their most precious commodities—their kids.

The sad story that is ending well for kids nationwide

In 1986, 11-year old Keith Algreen suffocated in a gravity flow wagon of shelled corn on his family's Iowa farm. After her son's death, Keith's mother, Marilyn Adams, vowed that she would spare other families from the pain of losing a child. So, she began to promote farm safety and, in that process, discovered that a high number of children are injured or killed each year on U.S. farms.

Farm Safety 4 Just Kids was formed in 1987. Today, the same deep concern and caring that founded the organization still drives the members and staff of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids to work tirelessly to fulfill the their mission – to prevent accidents from happening to children.

A Voice For Children . . .

The goals of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids are:

1. Increase public awareness and understanding of the hazards to children on the farm.
2. Provide individuals, families and communities with educational opportunities and resources to make the farm a safe and healthy environment.
3. Motivate and empower individuals, farm families and communities to make positive changes regarding farm safety and health issues.

Based in Iowa, Farm Safety 4 Just Kids is a nonprofit organization serving families in the United States and Canada. Farm Safety 4 Just Kids provides resources and training to individuals and communities to conduct farm safety awareness and education programs.

The Farm Safety 4 Just Kids Chapter system works as a network for conducting farm safety programs in communities throughout the United States & Canada.
Chapters have community ownership and responsibility for conducting local children's farm safety activities using resources and assistance from Farm Safety 4 Just Kids. Everybody benefits including farm families, agriculture-related businesses, FFA, 4-H, schools, producer groups, university extension, emergency medical personnel, health professionals, civic groups, and anyone who shows an interest in the safety of children on the farm can initiate or join a chapter in their community.
